Changes to BRP Cards: The Shift to e-Visa in the UK

The UK Home Office is introducing significant changes to the way immigrants prove their right to live, work, or study in the UK. From January 2024, Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs), which have long been the primary physical proof of immigration status, will be phased out in favour of the new e-Visa system.

What is an e-Visa?

An e-Visa is a digital document that confirms an individual’s immigration status in the UK. Unlike the physical BRP card, the e-Visa is stored electronically and can be accessed and shared online. This transition aims to modernise the immigration process, making it more efficient and secure.

Key Changes to Note:

No More BRP Cards
The UK Home Office will no longer issue BRP cards for most visa categories. Existing BRP holders may still use their cards until they expire, but new applicants will receive an e-Visa instead.

Online Proof of Status
Individuals with e-Visas can view and share their immigration status through the UK government’s online portal. Employers, landlords, and other relevant parties will also be able to verify your status online, eliminating the need for physical documentation.

Enhanced Security
The e-Visa system is designed to improve security by reducing the risk of document loss, theft, or forgery. Your immigration status is linked directly to your digital profile, which can be accessed securely with your personal details.

How Will This Impact You?

  • For Employers and Landlords:
Instead of requesting a BRP card, you will need to verify a person’s immigration status online using the government’s Right to Work or Right to Rent service.

  • For Visa Holders:
It’s essential to keep your personal details, such as passport information, up to date with the Home Office. Any changes will be reflected in your e-Visa, and failure to update your details could affect your ability to prove your status.

  • Travel Considerations:
Travelers are advised to carry a copy of their e-Visa status and ensure their travel documents are in order, especially when entering or leaving the UK. Some countries may still require physical documentation, so it’s crucial to check travel requirements before departure.
