Spouse of British National

Overview of the Spouse Visa

The Spouse of a British National visa allows individuals who are married to or in a civil partnership with a British citizen to live and work in the UK. This visa is part of the family reunion category, designed to bring families together.

What are the main requirements?

The main requirements for a Spouse Visa for the UK are:

Relationship Requirements:

  • You must be married to or in a civil partnership with a British citizen or a person with settled status (Indefinite Leave to Remain) in the UK.
  • The relationship must be genuine and subsisting (i.e., not a marriage of convenience). You must be able to provide evidence of a legitimate and ongoing relationship.

Financial Requirements:

  • You must meet a minimum income threshold, typically £29,000 per year, or have sufficient savings. This amount may be higher if you have children.
  • Alternatively, you can demonstrate financial support through other means, such as savings or a combination of income and savings.

English Language Proficiency:

  • You must prove that you have an adequate knowledge of the English language. This can be demonstrated through a recognised English language test or by having a degree taught in English.

Accommodation:

  • You need to show that you have adequate accommodation for you and your spouse in the UK.

Age Requirements:

  • Both applicants must be at least 18 years old.
