UK Immigration Updates 2024

In 2024, the UK government introduced major changes to its immigration policies, primarily aimed at reducing net migration while addressing labour shortages in specific sectors. These adjustments stem from political, economic, and social factors such as the consequences of Brexit, the need for a skilled workforce, and public pressure to better manage immigration. The main objective is to create a high-wage economy while ensuring that migrants contribute positively to public finances.

Key updates include:

  • Skilled Worker Visa: The minimum salary requirement rises from £26,200 to £38,700, effective from 4 April 2024, along with a new Immigration Salary List, reducing eligible occupations significantly.

  • Student Visa: Stricter post-graduation work conditions under the Graduate Visa scheme will impact international students.

  • Health and Care Worker Visa: Care workers will no longer be allowed to bring dependants, and salary thresholds are adjusted.

  • Immigration Health Surcharge: The surcharge increases from £624 to £1,035 annually starting from 6 February 2024.

  • Family and Partner Visas: The income threshold for sponsoring a spouse or partner rises to £29,000, effective from 11 April 2024.

  • Global Talent Visa: Criteria are refined to attract top talent, with no salary or English language requirement for applicants who secure an endorsement or prestigious award.

  • Border and Immigration Control: Enhanced biometric data collection and new digital platforms streamline applications and reduce processing times.

  • Permanent Residency: The Indefinite Leave to Remain process is simplified, with potential for shorter wait times.

Businesses must adapt to new sponsorship rules, including higher salary thresholds and compliance requirements. Public opinion remains divided on the impact of these changes.
